It’s time to have some meta crazy fun around here. This one seems like a comedy meant for the WTF genre, but it does have genuine solid satire on the movie business that feels familiar. The fact that it manages to create a movie within a movie and we care for characters from both worlds is a rather rare achievement. There’s going to be one or two characters that are familiar in the background, but unlike a real movie, the protagonist here is the writer of the script.

Backstage Madness (2025) is written and directed by Amanbek Azhymat. The screenwriter (Bolot Tileberdiev) is 70 years old and still uses a typewriter as well as trying to keep his ideals about what a film should have. This comes in direct conflict with the producer (Kuralbek Chokoev) who wants a Hollywood-style blockbuster with gunshots, explosions, gangsters and love scenes. He also keeps adding patrons who give him money to the film, asking the screenwriter to just put them as main characters regardless of how many rewrites it takes.

Yes, this one is a fine mess of convoluted narrative that somehow works without having to worry too much about the premise. As shifting the premise is the name of the game, there is no need to keep consistency in the in-world movie plot which also spills into the real world as the screenwriter is literally chased around by his own creations and characters from his other scripts.

Highly recommended for its humour and levity. If you have had enough with ridiculous plots and premises that go nowhere, this is where you can vent out and see how they can all be blown away. Worth a watch for its dark humour, and meta commentary on the state of filmmaking.
