Viewer’s Cut: True Detective and cutting back on TV series

Spoilers are not included in this post.

It’s been a while since HBO’s True Detective finale, but I just binged on this series a couple of weeks ago.  The entire season we follow murder detectives Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) as they investigate a crime back in 1995. We also get to see them as they are interrogated about that time in the present, after seventeen years has passed.

Woody Harrelson’s Marty is a no-nonsense cop, with an average life that include a wife, kids and an affair. On the other hand, Matthew McConaughey’s Rust is anti-social, unorthodox and critical of society at large. Rust seems to get too deep inside the mind of the killer. The murder of  a girl, with several ritualistic and pagan symbols seems to be too much for everyone to deal with, specially in Louisiana, except for Rust. He’s in his element, but as he comes closer and closer to a trail he becomes more and more distant and less sociable.

Meanwhile, both Marty and Rust are interviewed in the present by another detectives. Exactly why they are interested in what they have to say about those incidents is something they initially keep to themselves. As we learn about how the case was closed seventeen years ago, we slowly learn also why it’s been reopened. It’s nice where a show does not spoon-fed you every detail but lets you discover it yourself.

Recommended. The series has an intentional slow pace at the beginning as we discover the world that Marty and Rust inhabit. It’s conservative, religious and dangerous. The plot veers into the personal lives of both Marty and Rust as both their lives and the case they work seem to be conflicting with each other.

As refreshing as it can be to dive into a new series, the truth is there are a lot of TV shows out there. I realistically can’t see them all and I’ve accepted I’d rather not even take on too many. Game of Thrones starts this Sunday, April 6. That’s what I’ve been waiting for, and it will certainly get a Series Issues spot.

But I’m not certain of anything else that I can add to that. As much as people love to talk about their series, free time is always in short supply. So, with The Walking Dead going on hiatus and Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD getting their last entry on Series Issues this coming week, I don’t think I need more time in front of the TV screen right now.

There’s always a chance that a new series – one that deserves it – will dazzle me enough to be included in my downtime. On the other hand, summer should be close to appear. Anytime now. Outdoor activities are long overdue.

That will do for now.

In the middle of true Detective, really good show. The end of episode 4 was incredible…a gun show down all filmed in one shot for about 8min. Very well executed. Now go play outside 🙂
