First off the bat, it’s Red Sonja #5 Digital Exclusive Edition. Gail Simone has been running this series from Dynamite Entertainment, and it’s good. If you have been following the series, Sonja has been exiled from Patras by the General of the conquering/invading army, her former comrade Annisia.
She’s making it back, still recovering from disease thanks to her “bodyguards” Ayla and Nias. Just hearing the two girls come up with all sorts of revered titles for Sonja is hilarious. Sonja is still half blinded by disease, but she will have to undergo draconian-style medicine to get rid of it. On top of that Annisia just did the unthinkable and closed her favorite drinking spot – the Sundered Boar.
Suffice to say don’t expect Sonja to hold back when it’s time to face Annisia one on one. Annisia ain’t exactly hiding and is aching for battle. However there’s a surprise for both waiting as they draw steel.
The all female team faces a new enemy with a new face on X-Men Vol. 4 #7. It’s time you meet Lady Deathstrike again, as she shares the body of the latin heiress to a mob empire. She’s bent on getting her hands on a device hidden at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.
Unfortunately for her, the X-Women just gained a new member. Monet St. Croix is staying at the mansion, something that doesn’t sit well with Jubilee. As she goes out in a run with Karima Shapandar, they are seen by Lady D on her way to attack the school. Karima takes a bullet, forcing Monet to intervene and send her packing.
The incident alerts everyone at the X-Mansion of an oncoming assault. Completely outgunned, Lady Deathstrike has to rethink her strategy and as she does discovers there’s something else at the School that she wants more – Arkea. And to obtain it, she has allied with yet another deadly foe.
We’re still waiting for the encounter between Spider-Ock and Flash-Venom but for now we get Superior Spider-Man Annual #1.
As all annual issues go, this is a one shot. Superior Spidey is going against Blackout. However, this one is going to have repercussions. With Blackout going after everything that Peter/Otto and Spider-Man hold dear, Aunt May is on the line of fire.
Superior will have to win the day, but as he learns from Danny Ketch (former Ghost Rider), Blackout is not someone you can leave alive. He’s bound to come back after what you love the most. This forces Spider-Ock to take some pretty extreme measures. Otto is very much circling the drain here and proper intervention is sure to follow.
That will do for now.
