Okey, this is one film that as much you can categorize in science fiction and even some horror, it’s more or less a buddy film. I know you’ll be waiting for an alien invasion, but this is more like what would it be to deter an alien invasion with a group of your quirky friends. Don’t expect hollywood budget production values, this is more of a homegrown feature with more or less realistic dialogue.

Our Effed Up World (2026) was directed by Alice Maio Mackay and written by Mike Repsh and Jane Schoenbrun. Sheri (Sara Thompson) has lost her grandmother. She is slowly becoming estranged with her father Hank (Scott Major) who constantly watches the skies for falling meteors. At least she still has her best friend and co-worker Poppy (Annapurna Sriram) and they both hang out a the video store run by Finn (Jess McLeod) and Ash (Karis Oka). She has finally broken up with asshole boyfriend Harry (Jordan Dulieu), which makes her friends very happy. This all coincides with the fall of a strange meteor which unleashes a creature that appears to be the start of an alien invasion.

What we get is a bit of a tribute to classic sci-fi horror, however the film shines more in the rather honest and wholesome depiction of the friendship circle of Sheri, Poppy and Finn as they must somehow figure what’s going on. It’s the honesty of their dialog as they plan to stop this invasion and literally save the world where the movie shines. The filmmaker has centered in delivering realistic characters rather than a realistic alien effects.

Lightly recommended as a fun entry into the slacker genre by way of an alien invasion premise. There are some flaws in the execution but the characters are engaging enough for the audience to care. Worth a watch if you’re in the right mood.
