Before we get to the movie, we’ll need a very brief intro to Live Action Role Play or LARP. In Montreal, all I’ve seen is the guys with foam swords that hit each other at Parc Mont-Royal. I know there’s more to that. It’s Dungeons and Dragons in costume, live and in person. I know it involves a lot more than that, but here’s the long and short of it: you don’t have to know a whole lot about it to enjoy this movie.
Lloyd The Conqueror wastes no time in poking fun at itself. The plot introduces three slackers that are forced to go into the world of LARP for the sake of saving their scholarship and an over the top villain who happens to be the teacher that could fail them. From there we are presented with a range of characters from the very funny to truly obsessed which mission is actually not to teach you anything about LARP… other than the we humans can be truly hilarious about our hobbies and our obsessions.
Fans that can’t laugh at themselves beware, nobody escapes unscathed. That being said, the movie is never cruel to its environment. Eventually it embraces the fandom and gives every character its due. In the end you will cheer, you will raise your foam sword and you will laugh.
