It’s Otakuthon time!
It’s always more fun with a costume, although it was hot out there. Fortunately cosplayers are troopers and willing to put on the extra layers to showcase their craftsmanship. There was all sorts this year and I’m quite sure I missed a few. I attended all three days, although Saturday morning I just had to be a little late to get some of my Fantasia-lost sleep back. Some will say I’m getting too old for this crowd, but I really missed being in costume. I have an entire year to plan ahead and come up with something but even if I go as a civilian, I always love the ambience. It’s a different world for that weekend.
If I had to pick a winner, and this is when I might have to turn in my geek credentials, I would give it to the giant Starcraft Protoss Zealot (it look like it to me, then again, I’m sure someone will correct me). Anyhow, you can try to find it in the gallery below. Also, look for: Overwatch! The Johnny Depp Mad Hatter! Scarlett Overkill! The Carrie Kelley Robin! Kill La Kill! Mermaids with a siren!
That will do for now.
It’s that time of the year again when one of my favorite geek festivals arrives in Montreal. Otakuthon 2015, Montreal’s own anime convention, took place this weekend from August 7 through August 9. I love good cosplay. I love the people that get into it. Sometimes it’s about the details. Sometimes it’s the attitude. And sometimes you just gotta dress up and make a little bit of a fool of yourself so that your fellow otakus accept you into their ranks.
I’d really like your help with the elf queen character on your right, because that costume was simply amazing. I can’t seem to locate the character, though.
You also should look for Game of Thrones’ Queen Mother Cersei, portrayed by a cosplayer who had mastered the Cersei stare. For a challenge find: Imperator Furiosa, Walking Dead’s Michonne, Edward Scissorhands, Thor in a dress, Powerpuff Gir- Guys? A special mention to the Ultimate Gundam and Professor Stein.
That will do for now.

This year’s Otakuthon attracted a large number of crowds very early on. Although this means a lot longer lines, it also meant a lot more cosplayers than normal. I particularly noticed a large number of Attack on Titan cosplayers. Among couples, the favorite trend was Kirito and Asuna from Sword Art Online. I also noticed Elsa from Frozen, Ryuko from Kill la Kill and Kamina from Gurren Lagann were new choices. I’ll give props to whoever cosplayed as the actual mecha/gunmen from Gurren Lagann which included motorized drills. Impressive is an understatement.
Montreal’s own Otakuthon took place at the Palais du Congres from Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 24. As always, if I took your picture and you really prefer it not to be displayed on this site, please contact me through the about page (or just comment on this post) and I will remove it. This page is moderated so comments will not appear instantly unless you are a regular visitor. Here’s the gallery.
Coming next weekend, Montreal Comic-Con takes center stage. After I braved the crowds for Otakuthon, this one’s looking kind of scarily crowded. We’ll see.
