Spoilers don’t drive angry.

Taiwan has a growing horror film industry rich with local lore. This one is a local urban legend. Of course, a twist has been added for the sake of mixing horror with a little fantasy. Yes, our favourite sub-genre, the time loop is making another appearance in this feature. Don’t expect this to be a fun ride though, unless you like scary fun rides… If you do, this might just be your cup of tea.

Haunted Mountains: The Yellow Taboo (2025) is directed by Tsai Chia Ying and written by Zou Wan Zhen. Chia Ming (Jasper Liu) and Yu Hsin (Angela Yuen) are still hiking around the same mountains where they lost their friend An Wei (Tsao Yu Ning). Since then, a cloud seems to hang above them as Chia Ming has tried to propose but Yu Hsin keeps turning him down. Now something dark seems to be following Yu Hsin, and Chia Ming keeps noticing a figure in a yellow raincoat. Following that elusive vision can only lead to disaster. Once tragedy strucks, Chia Ming finds himself reliving the same day all over again.

We’re again in time loop territory, but with a much darker edge than usual. It’s up to Chia Ming to try to recognize what is the unsolved issue that keeps him here and the necessary choices to save Yu Hsin from a terrible fate. On each loop, Chia Ming explores more and more possibilities, but whether he’s missing something or deliberately ignoring a terrible truth he doesn’t want to face, he seems unable to change his fate.

Recommended with reservations. There’s possibly a few extended scenarios make it just a tad longer that it needs to be, but not critically so. There’s another additional ending after the credits (not the entire credits, thank god) where you get a resolution that ties up some loose ends. Worth a watch, but only if you haven’t become tired of the time loop plot device.

That will do for now.
