Spoilers offer to hold the gold during the fight.
I love good action feature when the focus is on action itself. Action films are often part fantasy. It’s obvious the protagonist would be out of breath just coming out of the first fight much less have the stamina to take out a long line of antagonists. That’s when we make use of our suspension of disbelief and just remember to go along with it.
Sisu (2022) is written and directed by Jalmari Helander. 1944. The Nazis are retreating from Finland into Norway, leaving nothing standing in their path. A lone miner named Aatami (Jorma Tommila) seeks for gold in the vast laplands, staying away from the big conflict. However, once he finds it, it is no easy task to get past the Nazi soldiers. A nasty group led by brutal SS officer Bruno (Aksel Hennie), don’t seem to bother with him and much rather keep the female captives they have onboard their truck. However, all things change when they learn he’s got a satchel full of gold. What they don’t know is that Aatami is not a regular old miner, but a retired legendary combatant.
This could’ve been just another run of the mill action film, and for some audiences that’s all it is. But with a more brutal, close approach to the action and not afraid to send bloody body parts everywhere, it’s also a very guttural and violent punch with a solid cinematography and decent production. You will see a lot of decisions telegraphed in advanced. There’s no shocking surprises, but it is one of those films that creates solid fun action-packed entertainment.
Highly recommended for audiences looking for some action. You’re not going to see anything particularly original or unpredictable, but it will contain enough entertainment throughout its run. Worth a watch with some popcorn and a willing audience.
That will do for now.
